Our popular culture seems to have a love-hate relationship with design and renovation. Movies like "Money Pit" present construction as a series of disastrous mishaps perpetrated by blundering crooks. Yet the design magazines portray a perfect world of beautiful projects and beaming homeowners. Of course reality lies somewhere in-between. Tracy Kidder got it right with "House", his best-selling book that realistically captured the conflicts and rewards inherent in any major project.
Given tight schedules and budgets, lack of a common language between architects, builders and clients, and variables like the weather, it's not surprising that projects don't always go as planned. Problems tend to fall into the following categories:
