The Emotional Side
Understanding the emotional dynamics: Feelings about change
Feelings about Change: Whether we like it or loathe it, change activates issues around control, trust, optimism/pessimism, and security. Even if you are eagerly anticipating the finished product, there is bound to be anxiety about whether it will be as good as you hope, or as bad as you fear. There is also sadness about destroying a place that contains precious memories, even if you've outgrown it.
- Recommendation- First, the design process should explore the options completely, so you feel confident that the direction you are taking is the best option. Then, if change makes you anxious, choose a process that offers the most assurances about the outcome. (commonly known as "hand-holding"). Hiring an architect for all five phases will provide you with the most personalized attention. However, this can vary depending on the size and structure of the firm. Ask the architect to what extent she, or one of her staff, will be available to answer your questions and guide you through the process. The contractor's personality and communication style will also be important. Finding someone who will explain in advance what's going to happen feels better than having your roof torn off without any notice.
