The Players' Roles
Client's (Owner's) Role: Communication
The building is an expression of the client's requirements; the clearer these are, the more responsive the building will be. From a design standpoint, this means communicating both big-picture requests (we want a place for the family to gather), and minute details (we'd like an outlet inside the medicine cabinet for an electric razor).
Communication is also key during the construction process. It's important to establish your "house rules" like no smoking, or no loud music. If the electrician is parking his truck on your flower bed, let the contractor know (diplomatically) that the area is off-limits. A weekly meeting is a good time to air any concerns that come up.
Client's (Owner's) Role: Commitment
Creating a building is not a task for the faint of heart. The combination of spending large sums of money, making many decisions quickly, and physical dislocation leads to stress. It's important to carve out adequate time for the process; to review design options, interview contractors, and make innumerable decisions about materials. The more energy, curiosity, and enthusiasm the client brings to the project, the greater the rewards for all involved. (need to link)
