The Players' Roles
Client's (Owner's) Role: Relationship with architect
Your relationship with your architect can vary based on the size of your project, the range of services provided, and your respective personalities. A belief in your architect's competency and integrity are critical to create the trust necessary to communicate your hopes and dreams. You'll need to reveal personal issues related to money, bathroom and dressing habits, marital relations, etc.
A true collaboration requires mutual respect- the architect must believe the client's desires are valid and worth laboring over, and the client must believe that her architect has the ability and desire to successfully turn those desires into a building. The relationship also requires listening, patience, and thoughtfulness on both sides. The architect must avoid impatience with a client who changes his mind- these detours can be a way for some people to find the right path. The client must commit to understanding and honestly reacting to the architect's design proposals, and avoid quick judgements, whether positive or negative.
